Supporting Our Clients Through Growth

ShaeLynne Durkee

Employment Specialist

Working with Bridges since March of 2018

In the life of being an Employment Specialist at Bridges Employment Services and Training there is never a dull moment in your day. My job duties range from writing client reports to job coaching when I am needed. Overall the job of an Employment Specialist includes helping clients learn and gain the work skills they need to be successfully employed. These services are considered ‘pre-employment services’ that are done before being competitively employed. Some of these services include; Work Based Learning Experiences, Community Based Assessments, Informational Interviews, Skill Building, and Mobility Training.

The thing I love most about my job is being able to see the growth of each client. Some of our clients have been told they are unable to work or that they simply can’t. This is not accurate at all. There are no words to describe how good it feels to be able to help someone achieve their goal and beat down the barriers that society puts up. Having this job has really helped me grow as a person. My end goal in life is to become an Elementary Special Education teacher. I have gained so much knowledge and supports from my current position that I will be able to take along with me as a teacher. The biggest take away from my job as an Employment Specialist so far is, everyone is different. Disability or not we all need extra support at times, what works for one person may not work for another. I make it my goal every day to find the supports needed to help each of my clients successful, this comes with no limits.
